FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[001] The present invention relates to razors or shavers and, more particularly, to razor or shavers blade units that have a self-leveling trimmer blade. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] In recent years, razors or shavers with several blade numbers have been proposed in the patent literature and marketed, such as the Mach 3 ™ razor or shaver with five blades and the razor or shaver with five blades Fusion ™ available from The Gillette Company.
[003] Increasing the number of blades in a razor and shaving device generally tends to increase the shaving or waxing efficiency of said device, and to provide a better distribution of the compression forces on the skin, but it can also tend to increase the dragging forces, reducing maneuverability and reducing the ability to trim, for example, the sideburn region or near the nose. To solve this problem, an extra blade can be mounted on the back of the razor or shaving compartment for trimming.
[004] Short hairs are typical of hair growth of approximately twenty-four hours. The edge of a trimmer blade on the razor or epilator is capable of cutting short hair at an ideal angle if the blade unit is oriented at an appropriate cutting angle during use. However, it is unlikely that a user has any knowledge that the trimming unit has been designed with an ideal cutting angle in mind. In addition, even if they were aware, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to position the razor or shave so that the trimmer blade was oriented at the ideal cutting angle. As a result, not all consumers are getting the best results from their trimmers.
[005] Therefore, it is desirable to obtain a trimming element that puts the blade in contact with the skin and maintains an ideal cut angle during use to maximize efficiency. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[006] In one aspect, the invention features, in general, a shaving or shaving blade unit that has a self-leveling trimmer assembly. The razor or shaving unit comprises a compartment that has a front, a rear and two sides that extend from the front to the rear with one or more razors or shavers arranged within the compartment between the front , the back and both sides. A trimming device is pivotally mounted at the rear of the compartment. The trimming device comprises a trimming blade that has a cutting edge, the trimming device rotating and presenting the cutting edge at an ideal skin-blade cutting angle and maintaining the cutting angle during use to maximize cutting efficiency.
[007] In one embodiment, the trimming device comprises a structure articulated to a pivoting interface at the rear of the compartment. The pivoting interface may comprise pins arranged at the rear and opposite sides of the compartment where the structure is connected to the pins through C-shaped members arranged on the ends of the structure. The pivoting interface may also comprise pivot assemblies in the structure, such as ball or cone shaped pivots at opposite ends of the structure which are in interface with similarly shaped openings in the compartment. In one embodiment, the pivot assemblies comprise shell bearing pivots at the ends of the structure that are interfaced with shell-shaped openings in the compartment. In another embodiment, the pivot assemblies comprise torsion elastomers arranged on the ends of the structure that are in interface with grooves in the compartment.
[008] The structure supports a trimmer blade that has a cutting edge, a trimmer protection arranged in front of the cutting edge of the trimmer blade and a trimmer cover arranged behind the cutting edge of the trimmer blade. The trimmer protection and the trimmer cover include points of contact with the skin that come into contact with the user's skin during use. The ideal cutting angle of the trimmer blade is adjusted at an angle to the tangent of the plane to the point of contact with the skin of the trimmer protection and the point of contact with the skin of the trimmer cover. Since the structure is designed to rotate, once contact is made with one of the two points of contact with the skin, the structure rotates so that both points of contact with the skin make contact. As a result, the trimmer blade is oriented at the ideal cutting angle, regardless of the approaching angle of the trimmer with the skin.
[009] In another mode, the compartment includes a main protection in front of the compartment and a main cover on an upper surface at the rear of the compartment. One or more razor or shaving blades are arranged inside the compartment between the main protection and the main cover. For this modality, the self-leveling trimmer blade is arranged behind the main cover. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[024] The shaving or shaving blade unit with the self-leveling trimmer according to the present invention will be described with reference to the figures below which illustrate certain modalities. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these modalities do not represent the entire scope of the invention which is widely applicable in the form of variations and equivalents, as can be encompassed by the claims attached to the present invention. In addition, the features described or illustrated as part of one embodiment can be used with another embodiment to produce yet another embodiment. The scope of the claims is intended to extend to all such variations and equivalents.
[025] Referring to Figure 1, the razor or shaver 10 includes the disposable cartridge 12 and the handle 14. The cartridge 12 includes a connecting element 18 that connects to the handle 14, and a blade unit 16 that is pivotally connected to the connection element 18. The blade unit 16 includes a plastic compartment 20, a main cover 22 on the front of the compartment 20 and a main cover 24 on the back of the compartment 20. The main protection 22 can have a plurality of fins 34 spaced in relation to each other, extending longitudinally along the length of the compartment 20. The main cover 24 may have a lubricating strip 26. Elongated shaving or shaving main blades 28 are positioned between the main protection 22 and the main cap 24. Although five main blades for shaving or shaving 28 are shown, it is understood that more or less main blades for shaving or shaving 28 can be fitted s inside compartment 20. Blades 28 are shown attached inside compartment 20 by clips 32; however, other assembly methods known to those skilled in the art can also be used. These and other features of the shaver 10 are described in U.S. Patent No. 7,168,173.
[026] With reference to Figures 2 and 3, the cartridge 12 includes a trimming device 40 mounted at the rear of the compartment 20. The trimming device 40 includes a frame 42 hingedly mounted in the compartment 20. The frame 42 can comprise a metal cutting wire or molded plastic substrate. Alternatively, frame 42 can be made of 0.28 mm (0.011 inch) thick stainless steel sheet metal. In any case, the material is cut and formed to provide characteristics for articulating attachment of the frame 42 to the compartment 20 and to support the trimmer blade 44. The structure 42 can also include a trimmer guard 46 located on the front of the trimmer blade 44 and a trimmer cover 48 located behind the trimmer blade 44. The trimmer blade 44 mounted on the frame 42 includes a cutting edge of the trimmer 58. For the modality shown in Figures 2 and 3, the rotating sockets 80 are attached to the rear of the compartment 20 by clamps 32 and the frame 42 is pivotally mounted on the rotating bezels 80 by means of pins 82 disposed on opposite faces 88 of the rotating bezels 80. In the alternative modalities discussed below, the structure 42 can be pivoted directly in the compartment 20 so that the structural characteristics that provide the pivoting interface comprise an integral part the plastic compartment 20.
[027] As shown in Figures 4a to 4c, the frame 42 has an anterior wall 52, a rear wall 54 and an intermediate wall 56. The brackets 60 at the opposite ends of the structure 42 provide fulcrums 64 to articulate the ends of the frame to compartment 20. The front wall 52 forms the trimmer protection 46 and the rear wall 54 forms the trimmer cover 48. The trimmer blade 44 is welded to the intermediate wall 56 by welding points with the cutting edge of the trimmer 58 in position precise in relation to the trimmer protection 46 and the trimmer cover 48. The trimmer protection 46 includes the skin contact point 66 and the trimmer cover 48 includes the skin contact point 68, both in interface with the user's skin during use. As shown in Figure 5, a plane 70 tangent to the skin contact points 66, 68 defines a reference plane from which the ideal cutting angle 72 of the trimmer blade 44 is measured. The surface of the intermediate wall 56 is oriented so that the cutting edge 58 of the trimmer blade 44 is positioned at the ideal cutting angle 72. For the present invention, the preferred ideal cutting angle 72 is in the range of 17 ° to 35 °. Most preferably, the ideal cutting angle 72 is about 23.5 °.
[028] As illustrated in Figure 6, during use, the points of contact with the skin 66, 68 of the trimmer cover 48 and of the trimmer protection 46 come into contact with the user's skin 90. Since structure 42 is designed to rotate, since contact is made with one of the two skin contact points 66, 68, structure 42 rotates so that both points of contact with the skin make contact. As a result, the trimmer blade 44 is oriented at the ideal cutting angle 72 regardless of the approaching angle of the trimmer 40 during use. The approach angle is the angle between a line that is normal to a point on the trimming device that first makes contact with the skin and a plane tangent to the point of contact on the skin. In addition, due to the rotation of the trimming device 40, the ideal cutting angle is maintained by the cutting movement, as long as the points of contact with the skin 66, 68 remain in contact with the skin.
[029] Frame 42 can rotate clockwise and counterclockwise, providing an angular range of rotation of about 32 °. The rotation of the frame 42 can be limited by the interaction of the trimmer protection 46 and the trimmer cover 48 with the compartment 20. For example, as shown in Figure 6, the counterclockwise rotation can be limited by the interaction of the rear side 74 of the trimmer cover 48 of the structure 42 with the compartment 20 and the clockwise rotation is limited by the interaction of the rear side 76 of the protection of the trimmer 46 of the structure 42 with the compartment 20. The structure 42 preferably has a position predefined where the trimming blade 44 is parallel to the rear of the disposable cartridge 12. From the predefined position, the structure can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise, preferably about 10.5 ° in the direction counterclockwise and, preferably, about 21.5 ° degrees in a clockwise direction, offering an angular range of rotation of about 32 °.
[030] In manufacture, structure 42 can be cut and formed from a sheet of metal, comprise a substrate wire cut from a metal block or comprise a molded plastic substrate. The trimmer blade 44 is placed against the inner surface of the intermediate wall 56, to which it is fixed by welding points. The frame 42 is placed at the rear of the compartment 20, sliding it forward over the rear of the compartment 20 with the fulcrum 64 on the brackets 60 of the structure 42 mounted on a pivoting interface at the rear of the compartment 20. For the modality shown in Figure 3, rotating bezels 80 are placed at the rear of compartment 20, sliding them forward over the back of compartment 20. Rotating bezels 80 are fixed to compartment 20 by clips 32, where the second legs 38 of clips 32 they pass through upper grooves 84 and lower grooves 86 on rotating bezels 80 and also through grooves 36 in the compartment 20. The first legs 34 of the clips 32 pass through the grooves 30 in the compartment 20. The pins 82 are inserted in holes in opposite sides 88 of the rotating bezel 80. The frame 42 is then placed at the rear of the compartment, sliding it forward over the rear of compartment 20 with the fulcrums 64 on the brackets 60 of the structure 42 aligned with the pins 82 on rotating bezels 80. As shown in Figure 4a and Figure 5, the fulcrums 64 can include C-shaped members formed in the supports 60 that fit by pressure to the pins 82 disposed on the rotating bezels 80.
[031] In the alternative modalities shown in Figure 7 to Figure 11c, the structure can be pivoted directly to a pivoting interface in structure 42. For example, as shown in Figure 7, the pivoting interface can comprise separate pins 102 inserted in the openings in the compartment 20. Optionally, the pins 102 can be molded as part of the compartment 20. Similarly to the previous embodiment, the fulcrums 64 can include C-shaped members formed in the supports 60 that fit by pressing the pins 102.
[032] In other embodiments, the articulation movement of the structure 42 depends on the model of the fulcrums 64 included in the supports 60 of the structure 42. For example, in the embodiment shown in Figure 8, the fulcrums 64 include pivots in the shape of a sphere 112 arranged on the supports 60 that are in interface with ball-shaped openings 114 in the compartment 20 that receive the ball-shaped pivots 112. In another embodiment shown in Figures 9a and 9b, the fulcrums 64 include cone-shaped pivots 122 arranged on brackets 60 that interface with cone-shaped openings 124 in compartment 20.
[033] In another embodiment shown in Figure 10, the fulcrums 64 include cup-bearing pivots 132 arranged on the supports 60. Cup-bearing pivots 132 are interfaced with the cup-shaped openings 134 in compartment 20. The cup-shaped openings 134 are dimensioned and shaped to control the movement range of the cup-bearing pivots 132 and the rotation of the corresponding structure 42. For this embodiment, the shell-shaped openings 134 can be dimensioned and shaped to limit the rotation range of the structure 42.
[034] In another embodiment shown in Figures 11a, 11b and 11c, twisting elastomers 142 are attached to the supports 60 at the ends of the frame 42 to allow the rotation movement of the frame 42. The twisting elastomers 142 are in interface with the grooves 144 in compartment 20. For this embodiment, the twisting elastomers 142 deform, allowing structure 42 to rotate or rotate.
[035] The dimensions and values presented in the present invention should not be understood as being strictly limited to the exact numerical values mentioned. Instead, unless otherwise specified, each of these dimensions is intended to mean both the mentioned value and a range of functionally equivalent values around that value. For example, a dimension shown as "40 mm" is intended to mean "about 40 mm".
